Germ
City is
a multi-state, multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary,
and multi-functional program, integrating research, education,
and Extension activities with hand washing, food safety,
and personal health. Our work has been supported by USDA
National Integrated Food Safety Initiative: Cooperative
State Research, Education and Extension Service, U. S.
Department of Agriculture, under Agreement No. 2001-51110-11424,
2001-2004. Germ
City in
Washingston State has also been financially supported by
the Olympia Host Lions Club (Olympia, WA), the Mason County
Health Department, and the Group Health Community Foundation.

In
seven years, the Germ
City Program
has evolved from three cardboard refrigerator boxes taped together
with a black-light box on the top to a highly replicated program
with curriculum, evaluation tools, and support materials used
by thirteen universities and many community partners. The Germ
City Program
is being conducted by Washington State University, West Virginia
University, West Virginia State University, Alabama A & M
University, University of Idaho, University of Hawaii, University
of Vermont, Western Illinois University, University of Tennessee
(Expanded Food and Nutirition Education Program (EFNEP), University
of Arizona, and University of California-Davis as part of Extension
and education outreach activities. The Lane County Fair in Eugene,
OR is conducting fair and community programming with volunteers
and recently the Food and Drug Administration established a program
in Buffalo, NY .
Members
of our Germ
City team
are actively involved with the newly formed Clean Hands Coalition
established by the Centers for Disease Control with industry,
agency, university, and organization support. B. Susie Craig
of Washington State University Extension and Martha Barclay of
Western Illinois University are co-chairpersons of the Education
and Resource sub-committee.
Our
program owes its success and community replicability to the dedication
and enthusiasm of Extension educators working with community
partners. Working with a diversity of volunteers from agencies,
organizations, and local communities, they have created meaningful,
collaborative programming that is making a difference in public
health and food safety. Collaborators include county and state
health departments, public and private schools, including after
school programs, Association of Infection Control Specialists,
school nurses, teachers, hospitals and health care facilities,
including community and military facilities, fairs and festivals,
4-H members and leaders, food service operations, Department
of Social and Health Services, Head Start, and senior citizen
centers.
